CK 5 Derry 


The City of Derry lies on the banks of the River Foyle in the Northwest corner of Ireland. It is a city with a historic Turbulent past. Derry is a major tourist attraction and still retains the full-unbroken circuit of its medieval walls and cannon.

CK 5 Derry is the oldest Council in Area 4 being formed as a Cadet Council in 1916 and receiving its Charter in 1922 It was the first Council formed outside Belfast. CK 5 lies within Area 4.

CK 5 Derry meets on the third Thursday of the month. Contact can be made through the Area 4 e-mail address : koc.area4@hotmail.co.uk.

Since its formation CK5 has been at the forefront of Catholic action in the city being involved in such issues as Social Housing, Catholic Social Advice Centre, Catholic Building Society, Credit Union, and Emigration Bureau.

Current Council Projects include :
Refurbishing the Old Long Tower Graveyards. This includes refurbishment and           provision of paths, cleaning headstones, identifying, documentation and cataloguing of information.

A series of Monthly Talks on the Sacraments. These take place on 2nd Tuesday of the month and are given by local clergy.

Sending two pilgrims to Lourdes on the Derry Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes. Each year. This is facilitated by an Annual Draw.

The Pope John Paul II Awards
The Pope John Paul II Award was founded in the Derry Diocese in 2006 and was created to commemorate the late Pope John Paul II who was so committed to young people and had such belief and confidence in them. Four of the Councils in Area 4 lie within the Derry Diocese. As the Order has taken these Awards as the National Project for 2008-2011 the Supreme Knight and Brothers from Area 4 were invited to the Award Presentation on the 23rd and 24th February. The Keynote Speaker was His Eminence Keith, Patrick, Cardinal O’Brien, Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh. Awards were co-presented by Cardinal O’Brien and Dr. Seamus Hegarty, Bishop of Derry. 146 young people received their medals and a further five received their Papal Cross Awards. The Order involvement in the Awards was given prominence on both nights. The Supreme Knight, Brother Seamus McDonald, attended the Monday Ceremony and was very warmly received.
