CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION JUNE 3RD 2010, DUBLIN
The event was very well attended and the Order of the Knights of St. Columbanus was represented by 9 Knights from the Order.
Archbishop Martin gave a very warm welcome to everyone present and especially to the Knights and Dames of various orders in attendance. The procession began with a number of parish groups and individuals closely followed by the Knights of St. Columbanus who had the lead banner in the procession followed by the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre and others.
The Rosary was said in a number of world languages. And a true presence of Holy God was felt throughout and this was not only reflective in the faces of the recent receivers of First Holy Communion- but in the actions of a small group of Indian Children who gave a performance of what I could only describe as an eclectic mixture of Catholic and Hindi traditions just before the Blessing. The Bishop then ended ceremonies with a recitation of the Prayer for the Church in Ireland sent by Pope Benedict XVI.
The Pleasant weather remained for the evening and later Archbishop Martin returned to have his picture taken with the many people who had waited for him

Christmas Day Dinner 2008 R.D.S Dublin
The streets were still dark as Tremayne turned his car out of the drive-way and made his way to the R.D.S. in Ballsbridge to join his catering team and supervise the preparation, cooking, co-ordinating and presentation required to provide the 3 course dinner for the anticipated 350 guests and the additional 750 dinners to be delivered – a mammoth total of 1,100 meals for the poor, the needy and the homeless in the Dublin area.
It was Christmas morning 2008 and the culmination of months of planning and organisation by Eugene, Chairman , Tim, Vice- Chairman, Bro. Tom PGK together with the dedicated committee of Knights of St. Columbanus in Area No. 1 who since September had been meeting regularly to ensure that all the necessary elements of the plan were considered and the appropriate decisions taken, the responsibilities assigned and the raw materials sourced and made ready to ensure the success of the day. The overall objective was to provide a full Christmas dinner to our VIP guests that they would really enjoy on this day of days. Christmas Day can be a very lonely day for some.
As the Knights, their family helpers and the volunteers (numbering a staggering 535 in toto at one stage) began to arrive from 8 a.m. onwards the work of allocating personnel to the various necessary tasks including table setting & cutlery, food portioning and serving together with liquid refreshments, entertainment, “takeaway bags” preparation, filling and collation carried on under the management of the designated supervisors.
There being no bus transport service on Christmas Day the guests started arriving at 10 o’clock some walking, others in taxis provided free and the majority in the pre-arranged free shuttle coach transport from the two designated venues in central Dublin, Dawson Street and O’Connell Street. On arrival the guests were greeted individually and provided with a tea or coffee in the seated reception area awaiting the meal commencement. All were invited irrespective of background, belief or status by means of invitation cards and related publicity materials pre-circulated to all of the hostels, shelters and drop-in food centres highlighting the availability free-of-charge of the full 3 course meal of soup, chicken and ham plus stuffing and three vegetables followed by Christmas pudding and custard. Grateful appreciation is expressed to the many suppliers who donate food, other goods and cash which enable the function to take place.
The meal got under way at 11.15 and in total 405 guests were served the Christmas meal. Music and entertainment were also provided. During the proceedings the Archbishop of Dublin Dr. Diarmuid Martin, the Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Eibhlin Byrne and Supreme Knight Bro. Seamus McDonald arrived and addressed the guests and in addition met and spoke to many of the guests, the caterer and his team, volunteers and the Knights. RTE TV also attended and showed clips from the event on the 9 o‘clock news together with an interview with one of the Knights organisers.
In total 405 guests were present and enjoyed the dinner and over 800 packed meals were delivered to persons in their own homes through the good offices of St. Vincent De Paul, Alone and similar organisations. On leaving, each guest was presented with a “goody bag” of food and household products and also a “woolly hat” for Winter provided by Valerie who begged, borrowed and encouraged all her friends, relatives and neighbours to give her woolly hats instead of personal gifts for Christmas in order to present them to our guests on Christmas Day. Another noteworthy feature of the voluntary and altruistic spirit of the day was 5 year old Matthew who donated a 50 Euro note he had found to the Knights to assist the fund raising efforts.
At 1.30 p.m. after the closing speech and Cecil had finished up with our national anthem, the guests departed in the coach for the city centre. Under Oliver’s supervision the big clean-up commenced and shortly thereafter the RDS was restored to its pristine condition guaranteed to satisfy our generous sponsor Howard. Around 2.15, tired but happy the Knights made their various ways home to their own family Christmas dinner satisfied that the 84th (Yes 84th!) Christmas Day Dinner organised by the Knights had been a great success and eagerly looked forward to the same again in 2009.

AREA 2
On 21st Sept. 2011 Brothers in Area 2 held their first Information evening, particularly to encourage and inform potential new Brothers. This was an initiative of the Provincial DGK, Fr. Paul Alexander's Development Sub-Committee. On the evening, 8 out the 9 councils in Area 2 were present to encourage new membership and 7 potential new members turned up to see displays of the work undertaken by some of the councils and to hear from 3 speakers about what the Order has meant to them. Many, if not all plan to join the Order.
The speakers were Bro. Michael Hilton, CK3, Bro. Pat Doyle CK29 & Una Crossey, wife of Bro. Bobby Crossey CK130. All three speakers related their journey with the Order, in terms of family, fraternity and faith.
After the formal part of the evening there was tea, coffee & sandwiches in a convivial atmosphere which further encouraged exchanges between Brothers, wives and guests.

The Knights of St.Clumbanus shield has been recovered and renovated by council 133 Lisburn. The shield was then presented back to Down and Connor county of scouting Ireland. The competition is run every year. Ck133 also provide smaller replica shields in bronze to be retained by the winning scouts as well a replica for the scout hall. This is a very prestigious completion for Scouting and Ck133 are glad to be able to support the event.
Last May our scout troop, 23rd Antrim (Derriaghy), sent two patrols to the annual scouting competition the Columbanus Shield. The competition was held in Tollymore Forest Park. Throughout the May Day weekend, all 11 teams from Down and Connor county, were tested on various skills such as tent pitching, gadget building and teamwork. We were also marked on unknown challenges such as water canon building and making bivvy shelters. We had the opportunity to prepare and gut a fish and cook it on a hobo stove which was also built by each patrol. Preparations beforehand and competing on the weekend involved a great deal of hard work and time however it was enjoyed immensely by all involved. Sadly the end of camp had to come, but the closing ceremony was greatly anticipated by both leaders and scouts. Eventually it was announced that one of 23rd Antrim patrols had achieved silver status and the other gold. After what seemed an eternity it was announced that a 23rd Antrim patrol had won the competition and was awarded the historic and very impressive silver Columbanus Shield. After many years of competing the patrols were delighted to finally win the shield and are proud to have it hanging with pride of place in the den for the next year when we hope to be able to retain it.
Niamh (Winning Patrol Leader)
“As for the St. Columbanus Shield, for literally 40 years scout leaders from all over Down and Connor have tried to put together the best possible series of activities and challenges to test the skills and scouting abilities of the best scouts representing the troops from the different parishes. Rivalry has been intense between the best troops over the years with different winners lifting the shield as their reward for a close two days of competition. To win the shield is a magnificent achievement, coveted by many but achieved by relatively few. In recent times, the trophy has been won by four different troops in the past for years; with St. Colmcilles being the troop with the most victories, 16 in total. For the individual scout, the ability to perform at the highest level at the shield is testament to their scouting skills and the work of their leaders. Their sense of achievement is to be measured by their smile of satisfaction for a job well done at the closing ceremony and their feeling of pride and comradeship with their fellow scouts.”
Paul Browne (Down and Connor County Program Coordinator.)

About Area 10
Area 10 is made up of 3 active Primary Councils covering all of Co Cavan and Co Monaghan. For many years this Provincial has focused on spiritual formation holding a retreat each Lent and more recently an Advent Retreat. Our retreats are held in Damien House near Coothill Co Cavan where the Sacred Heart Fathers have their retreat House. Our Provincial Chaplain, Rev. Anthony Fagan gives us a great sense of renewal in very pleasant surroundings. These retreats are well attended by Brothers, wives and family members.
Area 10 has for the last 4 years held Reception Ceremonies each year when new Brothers are initiated to the Order. Order Robes are worn at our Provincial Meeting and our Meetings are attended by our Provincial Chaplain. Our Provincial Area works in close communication with our two Bishops, Most Rev. Leo O’Reilly D.D. Bishop of Kilmore, and Most Rev. Liam Mc Daid D.D. Bishop of Clogher. Our previous Bishop, Most Rev. Joseph Duffy D.D. always provided us with an open door for advice and guidance.
Recent Area Activities
At our recent Reception Ceremony held in the Convent of Mercy, Castleblayney, we had four new Brothers initiated to our Order. It is our ambition to have two reception ceremonies each year. We have planned to have our annual Social in a Monaghan venue early in the New Year.
The Pope John Paul 11 Award
The Pope John Paul 11 is dedicated to the memory of the late Pope John Paul 11 whose love of young people was so profound. The Award was launched by the Papal Nuncio to Ireland, His Excellency Most Rev. Dr Giuseppe Lazzarotto on 7th November 2006 in the Diocese of Derry.
Bishop Leo O ‘Reilly launched the Award in Kilmore Diocese on January 26, 2011 and this brings to eleven the number of Dioceses partaking in the scheme. In his message at the launch of the Award in Clogher Diocese on September 8, 2009, Bishop Duffy said “a recurring theme was the question of finding ways and means to adequately meet the needs of young people to be actively involved in the life of the Church at every level. I see this initiative of the Pope John Paul 11 Award as a practical, immediate and hands-on response to this need”.
The Brothers in Area 10 are delighted that the Award is up-and-running in our two Dioceses and we are more than happy to be involved on both organising committees. For more information go to

Primary Council Activities
Cavan Council [CK 47]
Patron Saint: St Thomas Moore
Grand Knight: Bro. Padraig Farrelly
Cavan Council is actively involved in all aspects of the work of our Order. Some projects our Brothers were involved with include:
· establishing the Credit Union
· organising the provision of a playing field beside St Felim’s School in Cavan Town
· the foundation of Loreto College, Cavan
· co-funding of loop system in Cathedral of St Patrick and St Felim, for the hard of hearing
· promoting temperance in the Diocese of Kilmore
· distributing Rosary Beads to Confirmation children in the year of the Rosary
· distributing Prayer Books to First Holy Communion children
· organising and taking part in Eucharistic Adoration in our own parishes and in St Clare’s Chapel, Cavan.
CK 47 is a progressive Council. Every year our Provincial Council organises two Reception Ceremonies for the initiation of our brothers. We are actively recruiting on an ongoing basis and we are glad to say that we always have new men for initiation at all Reception ceremonies.
Our Brothers in CK 47 are involved in much parish, diocesan and Order work. These include activities such as:
· order Pilgrimages to Ballyvoy, Knock and Drogheda
· attending all Northern Area Committee (NAC) functions
· two of our Bros hold office in NAC
· two of our Bros are Trustees of the Order
· one of our Bros is a Trustee of the Widows and Orphans and Benevolent Fund Committee.
At our regular monthly meetings we have studied the various Papal Encyclicals and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A special meeting was dedicated to the discussion of Pope Benedict’s Pastoral Letter to the Catholics of Ireland. A written submission on this was sent to Bishop Leo O’Reilly and to the Bishop’s Conference.
During the last year we have helped to fund various initiatives such as:
Ø Kilmore Diocesan Vocations campaign
Ø Adult Education in Kilmore Diocese
Ø Drugs Awareness Education
Ø Fr Jim Brady’s mission in Zambia
At the start of Advent, one of our Brothers produced and erected a beautiful Christmas scene on Farnham Street, Cavan Town. Currently we are co-operating with Bishop Leo O’Reilly in getting the John Paul II Awards scheme up and running in the Diocese. It is expected that this scheme will be launched in Spring 2011.
Our biggest project over the past year is the provision of Church services for the housebound. This involves the radio transmission of Mass and other Church services from St Micheal’s Church Potahee. These are picked up, within a radius of four miles on a simple dedicated radio set. Because of the hilly terrain locally, an outside aerial is sometimes required. This service has the blessing and approval of Bishop Leo, the co-operation and financial assistance of Rev. Fr Peter Mc Partlan P.P., Ballintemple and is fully licensed by Comreg. Our heartfelt thanks to the four Brothers who gave many days work to the project.
Recently we organised a public lecture on suicide and we submitted a motion on the topic for SAM 2009. A number of our Brothers made their way to Ara Coeli, Armagh and made a presentation to Fr Sean Brady on his elevation to the Cardinalate.
*** We were proud winners of ‘Council of the Year 2009’ ***

On the 27th June last we were honored to be asked to provide stewarding for the Episcopal Ordination of our New Bishop Most Rev. Liam McDaid D.D.
We have for the last 30 years organised our annual Orders Pilgrimage to Knock and chartered a 53 seater bus. This is a very important event for our pilgrims who have been so loyal to our Pilgrimage. We attend Pilgrimages at Ballyvoy and Drogheda, attend SAM & NAC. We interact with other Councils and are represented at all Order functions. Our Council raised funds for the Pakistan Earthquake Appeal and in 2009 we supported The Shannon Flood Appeal.
We occasionally organise Guest Speakers to an open night, such as Fr Peter Byrne and Fr Brian Mc Kevitt, editor of ‘ALIVE’ We have for a number of years promoted the Cause for the Canonization of Venerable Matt Talbot. Our Council obtained a relic of Matt Talbot and devotion is carried on each month on the 2nd Friday. We have Mass and bring along the Relic, together with promotional literature. This is well received by our Priests and parishioners.
Many of our Brothers are involved in the Pioneer Association and we include the Prayer of The Heroic Offering with the Matt Talbot Mass. Recently the Vice Postulator for the cause, Rev. Fr Brian Lawless ADM St Aghatha’s Parish Nr William St Dublin, visited and celebrated Mass with us. He gave a great talk on the life of Matt and he has promised to come each year as did his predecessor. We recite the prayer for his canonisation at all our Council meetings.
We maintain a supporting partnership with St Joseph’s Young Priests Society. Our Council donated€500 to the local branch in 2009. We include on our Council agenda the Prayer for Vocations. This is recited at our monthly Council Meeting. Inthe Year of Vocations, we organised and hosted a talk on vocations by the Vocation Director of the Clogher Diocese.
For the Year of the Priests, our Council chose, printed and distributed a Prayer Card for each one of our Council Brothers and friends. We each adopted a priest from our Diocese and undertook to say this Prayer for our Priest for the year. This was extended to Area 4 as part of our Diocese is in Area 4 (Enniskillen Council). They accepted and distributed the cards to their Council members.
We support Monaghan Arch Club. This club was founded 25 years ago with a large input from two members of our Council. The late Bro. Paddy Rocks HLM who passed away on the 1st November last and Bro. Donal Kenny have managed the Club for the last 25 years. They provided entertainment every Thursday night for the children, arranged transport and organised various activities. Last year the Club celebrated the 25th Anniversary of its founding. Our Council sponsors the Easter Party each year.
In the Year of the Rosary we provided and presented Rosary Beads and Prayer Books to all Confirmation children in Co. Monaghan. In the Year of the Eucharist we produced Prayer Cards for the First Communion Children. For a number of years we have provided a large Crib in the window of a public building in the town centre.
Ongoing Activities
· We hold two church gate collections each year.
· We source, cut, prepare and distribute Palm for Palm Sunday to four of our Parish Churches.
· The provision of stewarding for the large attendances at our annual Blessing of the Graves.
· Annual Mass for our deceased Brothers.
· Our project for this year is the provision of a permanent base for our Council meetings and other Order activities.
· The provision of Church services to those that are housebound.
· Annual Maintenance of the façade and grounds around the Christian Brothers old entrance.
Our cautious approach to recruitment has come from experience. On proposal of a new member a Bulletin is distributed throughout the Area, an Information Night is arranged and prospective Brothers are invited. On Initiation, every effort is made to encourage and help new Brothers during the early days of Membership.
*** Monaghan Council won the Council of the Year in 2001 and again in 2004 and have been runners up on several occasions.***
